I Filled the Cup Perfectly...Then Left It at Home

This is a revelation that I believe God has given to me out of our devotions over the last months, and that's really where my heart is, to share things that you gain from God, and then go and talk to other people about that. Because you get this amazing opportunity. When we do SOAP devotions, a few of us, or quite a lot of us, follow the same plan.
So we're reading the same things on the same days, and the purpose of that is you can go and have a conversation with someone else that's been reading, and you can say, "Oh, this is what I got." And they're like, "Did you know I got this bit of information?" And you put the puzzle pieces together, and all of a sudden the little bit that you has, have turns into a bigger story.
And so today I kinda wanna give you a part of the puzzle piece that I'm hoping might fit into whatever's happening in your life to create the bigger story. Are you guys all good with that? Yeah, 'cause that's really what I feel our job should be when we're coming to share. We're just giving you things that God's revealed to us to say, how does this fit in your life, and how does this change your life?
And over the last few months we had d- we'd been doing these great series, and they were around, how do we become pretty much better people? Is there anyone here who really loves to think about, how can I become and, and better myself in life? Yeah? A, a lot of people, that's kind of our thing in life. We're like, how can I be a better version of myself?
And that's across the board throughout the world. And so we did these two series. One of them was called Old Habits Die Hard, and that was all about, what is the, the junk in our life that's kinda holding us back from maybe some of the other things that we could be doing, that we just have gotten so used to it being there and not treated it?
And then we did our Mirror, Mirror series just recently as well, and that jumped on the tail end of the other. And that was looking at, well, what are the practices I can put into my life to be able to get to that point of recognizing what God wants to do in me? Now, I have a friend and, um, a high school friend, and she is, I would say, a serial, um, self-improvement book person, right?
She just devours self-improvement books, and when I go on holidays with my girlfriends, um, we tend to go and we, we split up into friends to stay in certain rooms, and I'm always with her 'cause it's just a combo that works well. And by the time I left, there's four books usually. Four books, she's like, "You gotta read these.
You've gotta read these ones." I'm like, "Thank you so much," and I'm never gonna read those. I'm gonna be honest. If you're listening, I am so sorry, Chanel, but I'm probably not going to. The reason why, now there's a reason why, I'm not just heartless. The reason why is I realized pretty early on, I started to read some self-improvement books, and I recognized that people that I was reading books of were trying to tell me things that I already knew, that I'd seen in scripture, and they're presenting it as this new thing.
I'm like, "What are you talking about? God said this forever." So then I realized, okay, for me, it's the scriptures. That's where I need to go to get my self-improvement. So, um, if anyone's thinking of writing their own, like, self-improvement book, I'll, I'll skim over it. All right? Just give it to me. But anyway, today I have given my, uh, little message a title, and it's called Fixed to Move, which sounds a little bit like an oxymoron, right?
How can something move if it's fixed? And I'm gonna unwrap that a little bit more. But my big question for now is, why do you think God wants us to deal with our stuff? So we've been looking at how do we become better people. Why do we think God wants us to deal with our stuff? Is it because it's just so that we can feel better living in this world?
Is it that I have a chance to live my best life? You know, that phrase, living my best life. Is it so that when I go to my high school reunion, I can just stick it to all of you? Yeah. Maybe a little bit of that, let's be honest. Um- Is it just because we know that makes God happy? Makes God happy. And I'd like to say, well, no.
I don't actually think God's there going, saying, "You need to do this to make me happy." In fact, I think it's the opposite. It's God saying, "I want you to be happy, and I'm gonna cheer you on to get rid of this stuff in your life that has actually taken up room where I'm actually meant to be. And it's taken up the space, and you've filled it with all the junk.
You didn't realize it was junk. It's okay, I still love you. You filled it with junk, whereas I've got like a g- I've got gold. I wanna fill those spots with gold in your life." But there's not a lot of room at the moment. And so I think he cheers us on because there's something super amazing that happens in the world when people start to become themselves.
Not the selves that we think we're meant to be, but the self that God's actually created you to be. Because then it goes far beyond it just being about me, and it goes out into our world. And I've got a little picture here that I wanna put on today, and this is a little picture of where, what I think about how society looks and how, um, God looks.
So let's pop this one up. Over this side, this is society. When we're thin- thinking about how do I create myself to be a little bit better, we have me, and then I work really hard to become the improved me, so that I can be the perfect me. And I go through that process. But what I soon find out is when I'm doing this, and this is what everyone says in the world, "You gotta be better, you gotta be bigger, you gotta be doing this and this," I'm trying to become the perfect me.
And I don't know if you've ever tried to maintain being the perfect you. It's exhausting. I don't wanna sign up for that. If I'm trying to maintain me, the perfect me, I'm always gonna fail. It's disheartening. It doesn't matter how much I try. I'm trying to improve myself. Why do I keep slipping back down to how I was before?
But then God says, "Well, this w- this is the reason why. This is actually how it's meant to be. There's you that I've depop- deposited into the world. Then you get to know me, and then there's a healed version of you, which is actually closer to the original version of who you're meant to be, which then means God shines through you."
It's no longer about me trying to be the perfect me, it's about me just being healed by God and God being able to do what he wants. And you know what happens? In society view, this is all about me. Whereas over here, I then feel propelled to go into the world and to help other people. Because what ends up happening is, in my life, God begins to fill me so that I can flow through to other people.
He fills me so he can flow through me and out to others. Now, when I was younger, one of my first jobs, I worked at Kmart. So fun. I purposely didn't learn how to use the cashiers, 'cause I didn't wanna be a checkout chick. So I used to do things like mixing paints, helping you with your outdoor furniture.
And one of my favorite parts of my job was I was in the confectionery, bulk confectionery section. Is anyone old enough here to remember when Kmart did bulk confectionery? No one. It's just me. That's okay. Um, so basically, in that job, I would have an entire section of probably 25 different types of candy, and I would have to just assess when I was at work, okay, which ones need filling up and whichever.
And you've still got these nowadays when you go to, like, the movies or whatever, and you get a little container, and you fill it up with lollies, right? Yeah. Nowadays they charge you per 100 grams. Back when I worked there, it was however much you could fit into the cup. You paid for that, right? So on the... I remember this very clearly.
Kev wants some. Um, I remember this very clearly. On one day, I was like, "We're going to the movies," with my friends, and I said, "I got it sorted. I'm gonna fill the cup of lollies for everyone." I so strategically placed everything into that cup so I could get the most in there, you know. Like, M&Ms in the side, squishing every little hole, filled it all up, and I was so impressed with myself.
I'm like, "That is the most candy in that cup I think you could actually ever get." And then I went to the movies, left the cup at home, didn't I? No one even got to eat all the time and effort that I put into my candy and creating that. No one ever got to eat out of it. And you know what I thought about that is, well, what was the point?
What was the point of doing that? And I think one of my big question is this: What's the point of being filled if nothing ever flows out? What's the point of me going and trying to get close to the God so that I can have the best life ever? And my next-door neighbor's struggling You're leaving the candy at home while everyone's at the movies.
Can you see what I'm saying? That was a true story. I didn't make that up. Some people do make up stories, I reckon. Uh, that was a true one, about the candy. It was real. I'm authentic, guys. Um, but there are people everywhere that are hurting. There are people everywhere that are struggling, and in fact, there are people in this room that are hurting and struggling.
Let's be honest, there are. And so maybe some of you are here listening to this today. But did you know that broken people actually break God's heart? Brokenness, it isn't rare. Hurting people is not rare, it is everywhere. And when I say broken people break God's heart, I'm not meaning that the actions of people that are broken make God angry.
He's like, "Oh, I can't believe people are doing this." 'Cause that's the picture of God that a lot of us have been painted. An angry God that sits up there and thinks, "Oh gosh, look at these people. What a bunch of numpties, working through life, causing problems for everybody else." But in fact, God's heart breaks when people who are broken don't know where to turn.
That is where God's heart breaks. He's not gonna judge someone who doesn't even know him for doing the wrong thing. His heart breaks for them. He's like, "Gosh, these people don't even know that they can turn back to me." God's heart breaks when broken people don't know that they can come home. And maybe some of you are exploring God at the moment.
Did you know that God wants you to come home? He's just waiting? Maybe that is a brand new thought for you. And so today, with my revelation that I'm bringing on this, it came out of my SOAP devotions, and it was upon what I noticed about God's heart for hurting people. And I saw it so much in this one particular book of the Bible, and it was the Book of Isaiah.
And so when I was doing my devotions on Isaiah, this was the main thing that stood out for me for the entire book. And I wanna share a little bit of this for you here today. So Isaiah, he was a Hebrew prophet, and I've put in there the Hebrew Bible prophet. So the Bible's split into, uh, two sections. One section was all the things that happened with the Hebrew people, um, of the Old Testament, and then we've got the New, which was for people who were not Hebrew, basically, which is us.
That's kinda where we live in. But the Book of Isaiah, it's actually quite interesting 'cause we can read a book like we would usually read a book from cover to cover. The Bible is extremely different to that. In fact, chapters within even certain books of the Bible can be hun- like decades, hundreds of years between one to the other.
It's not sequential sometimes when you read it. You could read chapter forty, forty-six or something, and chapter forty-seven is fifty years later. That's how it's created, and we don't know that. We don't know that at times. So in the Book of Isaiah, it's actually quite interesting. It's split up into three sections.
And the first section of the Book of Isaiah, and this is like chapters one through to thirty-nine, is actually talking to the group that were known as the Israelites. So the Israelites, not the country of Israel that you know now, the people that were called Israel. That was a title given to the people, Israel.
And so it was God basically calling out to them and saying, "Something terrible's about to happen. I'm giving you the heads-up." And what was about to happen was the Assyrian Empire was about to come in, and using some military force and political force, they were going to come to destroy God's kingdom of Israel.
And so Isaiah, he was there to say, "I'm giving you the heads-up that God's telling you there's some really hard stuff coming. Really hard stuff." And when we actually saw the history of what happened, the entire northern kingdom of Israel was actually destroyed during that time. So it was accurate what Isaiah was saying to them.
And then in the second part of Isaiah, it was after a whole bunch of them have been decimated, and they're hurting. The, part of their people are gone. And then in the second parts, in chapters about 40 to 55, Isaiah was then bringing the call of God to say, "There's restoration. There's something coming." And we see Jesus actually first talked about hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of years before he even comes.
And then the last part, in the last part of Isaiah, is where they actually, there was a king there, King Nebuchadnezzar, and he was trying to deport parts of the Israel people to Babylon. So there's a lot happening for these people, and we can read it through and go, "Oh, that happened, well, it must have been pretty sad for those guys."
It was decades and decades and decades of stuff that was really, really hard for them. And ultimately, Isaiah was the one person who was chosen. God picked him to be there, and his main thing was just to be a reminder through all of this stuff that was going on in their life to turn back to God And that God wanted his lost, displaced, hurting people just to come back to him.
That is the entire theme of the entire book of Isaiah. And so I wanted to read just a few scriptures here today to prove the point, and there's so many in there, I'm not gonna read them all. But I wanted to start off in Isaiah 1:18, and this is what God said to them. So this is before when the Assyrian Empire's gonna come through to destroy them.
"Come now, let's settle this," says the Lord. "Though your sins are like scarlet, I will make them as white as snow." Continuing on, "Though they are red like crimson, I will make them as white as wool." And so God was basically saying, 'I know you've turned away from me as a people. I know you've done some things that maybe I'm not impressed with and don't particularly love, but you can come back.
And I'm gonna forgive those things as long as you can just come into a relationship with me. You just need to turn back to me. That's all I want.' Further on, number 44, verse 22, God says this to them, "I have swept away your sins like a cloud. I've scattered your offenses like the morning mist. Oh, return to me, for I have paid the price to set you free."
Again, God was saying to them, 'Yes, hundreds of you were, were destroyed in that battle. I'm still waiting. I know you haven't turned back to me yet. I still don't mind. Like, I just want you to come back. Just come into a relationship with me again.' And then in Isaiah 55, a little further on, this was Isaiah himself who said this on behalf of God, and he says to them, "Seek the Lord while you can find him.
Call on him now while he is near. Let the wicked change their ways and banish the very thought of doing wrong. Let them turn to the Lord that he may have mercy on them." And I love this part, "Yes, turn to our God, for he will forgive generously." And I think we forget that sometimes. God forgives generously.
These, uh, these people were not great. Like, uh, they really turned their back on God, and God was like, 'Guys, seriously?' I love you. You know, I think that's some of our parents have been a bit like that in our lives, yeah? Anyone's parents? My, I was amazing, so my parents are fine, right? No. I think there's one thing that we can see, though.
God has never hid. God has never kept himself hidden Ever. He always reaches. He always reaches, and it's usually us that have actually turned away. Because God's biggest thing in His entire existence of who we are, is that God wants to dwell with His people. And if we ask, well, who's His people? Did you know it's actually every person that's ever been created?
And we think, "Oh, it's the churchy people. That's who He's talking about. He wants to dwell with the churchy people. Yeah, the ones in those buildings. He wants to dwell with those guys, no one else." No. His people is every person He's ever created. It's just the ones that turn to see Him and go to be with Him, spend time with Him, that get the benefit of knowing His relationship.
So God has actually got this open for everyone, but what do we tend to do? Well, we usually try to run away. If there's something in my life that I feel like I've really failed, I try to sometimes run away from God. And it happened from the very beginning. If we look at the story of Adam and Eve, most of us know it.
Adam and Eve, very first people. God created a beautiful garden just for community. That's all it was for, for them to just dwell continually in the presence of God. And the one thing He said was, "For your own benefit, don't drink, don't eat from that tree." Okay, that's it. Let's just hang out, but please don't eat from that tree.
So what do they do? Eat from that tree. But God comes back after that event has happened, and they're hiding in the bushes. As if He couldn't see them. Just saying. Right? He's hiding... They're hiding in the bushes, and God comes and He says, "Where are you?" And they say, "We're hiding because we're naked." And the one thing that God says with, to them is, "Who told you you were naked?"
God never placed shame on them. At no point did God shame them for what they had done. If He had come back to the garden, I feel, if He'd come back to the garden and they said, "We're so sorry. We ate from that tree that you said we weren't supposed to eat from." He would've gone, "Oh, you guys." Let's start again.
But you know what they did? They continued to hide the whole time. And then that sent us all on the track of now where people are trying to find God because of a brokenness that has entered into the world. But God says, "I just want you. I want you with your story, with your past, the warts and all. That's what I want."
That sounds weird, doesn't it, for our, our minds? You're like, "Well, aren't I meant to come, like, beautiful and holy," and then go, "I'm here, your holy br- holy bride, ready for you." He's like, "I'm happy with the, the one in the paper bag dress, okay? That's, that's all I need. I just want you to come to me." And for hundreds of years, people's backs were turned to God.
But then, of course, he had a plan, and this is where we love the fact that Jesus came. And that was God's plan. For the hundreds of years where people continued to turn their backs to God, he said, "Well, that's okay. I've got a plan. I'm gonna send Jesus, and Jesus is gonna reiterate what I've always told you.
I'm just waiting for you to come back. I'm just waiting for you to turn back." And we read this in John 1:14, and it says, "And the Word became flesh." Oh, we don't have that one? That's okay. "And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us. And we have seen his glory, glory as the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth."
And that was John himself had experienced that. He was in the presence of Jesus all the time, and he'd experienced that himself. And there's one thing that you can see about Jesus, that he always moved towards broken people. He always moved towards them, just like his dad. Just like God, he always made his way towards them, the outsiders, the rejected, the lonely ones, the sick, the forgotten.
Jesus didn't say, "Okay, I see you over there with your problem. You fix yourself, and I'll come back here next Tuesday." Like, that's not what he did. He went straight for them, and he said, "I wanna accept you as you are. I've got something special for you." And I'd go as far to say that people that have a real problem with the Christian faith Very little amount of the time has anything to do with what Jesus did.
If you read what Jesus did, there's not a lot of ways you could be angry at someone who loved so extravagantly. If anything, a lot of the negativeness around the Christian faith is because of the people that are meant to represent him getting it wrong. And that's not a judgment, like I'm, I'm in that group too, right?
But Jesus was radically different. And there's one verse in the Bible I've... A lot of people have like a life verse which they apply to their whole life. I've never really had just one, just personally, but there's this one verse in the Bible that for me, really s- I, I heard this many, many, many, many, many years ago, and it just did something in my life.
And this is now how my entire life has continued to move on from this point, and it's in Romans 10:14, and it says this: "But how can they call on him to save them unless they believe in him? And how can they believe in him if they've never heard about him? And how can they hear about him unless someone tells them?"
And many years ago I read that, and that hit my life. How can someone ever hear about what Jesus has done if no one's ever told them? And how can we judge someone if they've never known? We don't. We don't have that ability, and we don't want to So the big question as we're starting to wrap up today is what will you do with what God has done in you?
What does it mean for us? 'Cause God is still waiting. He's reaching, and maybe you've been hiding
But what if you didn't hide? What if you chose to make the difficult choice to step a little further forward into the unknown perhaps, and you started to have this presence and this proximity with God, and then you do what he has done for you. You begin to notice people, you begin to love people, you begin to listen to people's stories, you begin to include people, and you begin to step toward people just like this little girl.
Beautiful. What if we chose to do that? And for some of you, maybe you're in the room or listening online later, and you're like, 'Look, I still don't quite know what I believe about God. I don't.' And that's okay 'cause you're on a journey. You're on a journey to discover that for yourself. But if you just did those things, notice people, loved people, listened to people, included them, and stepped towards people that you saw that were in need, regardless of what you think about God, what sort of human being would you be But you add the God factor into there, whoo, we've got some power added to it, which is really, really cool.
And for those of us that know God, well, guess what? It's actually a mandate. This is something that Jesus said, "If you know me and you love me, then I want you to go and tell other people, and I want you to love extravagantly." We don't actually have an option. It's something that God is asking us to do, and he's saying, "I'm gonna give you the ability to do it, too.
Don't worry about it," because we are the mobile church. And the very first followers of Jesus were this. They were the mobile church, and it was never designed to be a country club where you get the group of people just come and sit together and then leave again. It was a movement of people fueled by God's Spirit to go out and let others know that they can have this intimate relationship with God This little scripture from First Corinthians, it says, "Do you not know that you are a temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?"
So when you go out, once you've started to get to know God more, and you go out into your world, you become that mobile church into the world to help others find him. Because we do this work vertically, which is what we were talking about. We sort ourselves out, and we try and get ourselves as right as possible with God, and we do that vertically so then we can go out horizontally, out this direction.
And then these are the four things that basically we start to do if you're thinking like, "Well, how do I practically do this?" Well, first of all, you seek Jesus. You openly and honestly go, 'I'm actually gonna look for you. I've never done that before, but I'm going to. I'm gonna look for how I see you presented in the world in your people.
I might be able to also come and be with you.' Be with God by going, 'Okay, I'm gonna start to maybe listen to some pr- some speaking around God, or I might even get a Bible and read some.' Can I suggest you start in the Book of John? Fantastic place to start if you're going to read. Do not start at Genesis.
It's not that type of book. All right? Um, you can speak with him in prayer, and that's just a conversation. You can do that anytime. And you can walk with him, being Spirit led. In fact, if you start just seeking him, and then you add to that starting to be with him, and then you start talking to him, and then you start walking with him, you will already do that process of having God start to shine through you without you having to do anything else.
Just having that process yourself, because we do it vertically, and then we get a chance to go out horizontally, not to get converts into the club, to be able to help people find God, 'cause that's really all you need in your life is that chance for you. I'm gonna bring back my little candy container here today.
Because we need to remember what God does in you is meant to flow out of you. It's meant to flow through you. Don't leave the goodness of God just to build yourself up and never share it with someone in your life. Now, because I also don't want to keep this for myself, I have actually hidden under one of the chairs today this little picture of a flower.
If you find it, you get to keep these. This is real. It's not a fake. If you wanna have a quick little feel under your chairs, um, I have hidden somewhere one of these. If someone's found it, you can say, "Me, I've got it." No, no. Is anyone? Anyone? No? Look, I'm gonna be honest, it's in an empty seat at the moment.
Oh See, someone slept in today. Joke's on them. Missed out on the candy. All right, I know where it is, and no one's
found it yet. Look, I will, I will share it after. Hey. Oh, Wendy. Oh, there we go. Share it through you. There's not enough for everyone in the room, just FYI. Oh, so I called this message, um, Fixed to Move, not being fixed in place, but fixed as people. We get a chance to be healed, and then we healed so that we can move to other people in our worlds.
And I've just got a last couple of questions that I want you to ponder on as we're finishing up today. Imagine if when people on the Gold Coast were doing it really hard, and they were struggling and they were hurting, and the very first thing that they thought of was: how can I find the mobile church of Jesus?
Who in my world is the person that I need to go to? Not because they have it all together, but because I have actually seen the authentic, messy life of a Christ follower who's continually trying to be transformed in this world. Not a perfect version of that person, but a person that I know has a connection to God, and I know that's where I need to go to.
Imagine if that person was you, and people just knew, "Oh, that's the one. That is the one that's gonna help me find Jesus in the midst of this." The very first movement of the church was called The Way, which I love, and ever since I started, um, my Facebook page, that's how old I am. Um, Facebook's still a thing, guys, the young kids.
Um, I've always put for religion in there. Mine said The Way the entire time I've had Facebook. I, I, I always say I'm a follower of The Way. Um, but the very first movement of The Way, they were believers in Jesus who lived out this Christian life in a very distinct, practical way. It was so different to what was being done back in those days, and it wasn't a formal religious system that everyone was used to.
And so that is the same as what we're, we're being asked to do now. People will get drawn to you. Uh, I'm saying this out of experience. I have random people constantly come to talk to me about their problems. I could just say hello to someone at the butcher's, and they're telling me the things that are going deep down in their life.
And originally, I was like, "Why does this keep happening to me?" And then I recognized it's 'cause I've made space over many, many years to go into my days and say, "God, if you wanna use me, let's see." And then they recognize that even when I don't feel like I'm doing anything out of the ordinary. Sometimes my husband's like, "Don't talk to anyone today."
"We have places to be." True. But there are people waiting for the representation of Jesus, which is actually gonna come through you, and we are all so specifically unique, and that's why I love the strategy that God's come up with. He has made every single person so unique that there's someone in this world that is gonna see Jesus because of who you are, the creation of how you're wired and that sort of stuff.
Whereas they'd look at me and go, "Ooh, she's too out there for me. Yeah, I'll stay clear from her." But for you, you might be the exact person that they're needing in their life. And so God does this. He orchestrates His people to become the little light posts all around the world. It's so cool. Just as I'm finishing up, I had this little story that I wanted to quickly share.
Just this week, I went and saw a show. It was a kids show, and as part of the show, you wore headphones over your ears, and everything was done in front of you, more so than it being like an acting show, it was the recording of sounds. And you saw them recording the sounds and telling the story, and it came onto different parts of your head.
It was very, very clever how it was done. And I was there with a whole bunch of my friends and our kids, and we had a whole row except two seats next to me that were empty. And a lady came in with her little daughter who was blind. She had her little stick, and she was trying to find a space, and we helped her up so she could find her spot to sit.
And instantly I thought, "Wow, this show is for her," because she can never see a show. She's never seen a kids show in her life, and this was specifically designed for you to use only your ears to get the experience. And as the show was going on, I kept looking over at the little girl, and she was, like, laughing and...
I was almost in tears. And I looked at the mom, and I was like, "
Speaker 2: This is great. Oh my gosh," and she's like, "Yeah."
Speaker: And it was just this moment where something was for her, and that's the God that I know. The God that I know is the God that goes, "I've got something for you specifically, and I'm gonna reveal it to you through ways you might even not expect.
But I'm gonna make it happen." And then for us that love Jesus, he goes, "You know how I'm gonna do it? I'm gonna do it through you guys, little things, so that I can become real in the life of a person." And isn't that awesome to know that God uses us for that? I'm just gonna get everyone to close your eyes and we're, we're gonna sing in just a, just a second to finish up.
But I wanna ask you this question What has God been doing in you lately? Not for you, but what do you feel like he's been doing in you? Has he been drawing you back to him or has he been drawing you to him for the very first time Has he been inspiring you maybe to take time to sit with him in a new way?
And maybe the noise of your life is becoming a little too loud, and he's saying, "Just quieten that down a little bit. Even though you're gonna be in the noise, quieten it down and spend the time with me." I'm here and I'm waiting. I'm not hiding
Out of that list that we had earlier, maybe there's one thing that you know, yeah, I really need to increase that particular thing in my life. Maybe today it's seeking Jesus fresh Maybe it's finally walking with Him in a new way, increasing the way in which you talk to Him If you are open and you are willing, God will always meet you in that place, and all he's doing is saying, "Just come back to me.
Just come to me. See me for yourself, because I see you for yourself."
